Link building is vitally important when it comes to SEO. But be careful – if you don’t know what you’re doing, it can cause more harm than good. Effective link building, where you get links on other websites linking back to your site, is based on links from high quality and authentic sites. Here are some tips for getting these all-important quality links and raising your position in the search rankings.

Guest Blogging and Content Sharing

Guest blogging is an important way of getting links on high quality websites, but you need to be careful – guest blog on spammy sites and you are liable to waste your effort. Google likes authentic, quality guest blogging and “dislikes” spam blog posts. It is a good idea to approach guest blogging with the idea of providing quality content to other sites, which will be used by their readers. The goal is to be helpful, informative, and thorough – and if the content and the subject requires it, you can add a link back to your own site. You can also add links by providing your byline, or company information at the end of an article. Guest blogging can be time consuming but when done right it has the potential to make a big difference to your ranking.

Social Media and Quality Links

If you have written an article or created a piece of content then one great way to get links is to get busy on social media. When you create content that people like, they will share it and mention it, and you’ll get links. Social “likes” are not the same as links but as word gets out people will start linking to your content as it gets shared.

Reaching Out for Links

Different to asking for or paying for links, it is possible to get links by reaching out to people you have mentioned in posts or articles, telling them you have written about them and asking them to share your content or add it to their website. It is a good idea to do this with people you already know, as you have more chance of them responding positively. This also works much better when you have an established brand and reputation – people will start sharing and linking to your content without you even having to ask.
